DEAR DEIDRE: MY boyfriend won’t tell his family that he’s in a gay relationship.
He’s 19 and I’m 21 and we met at university during freshers’ week. We became an item three months ago.
I’ve told all my family about us, although it was difficult, but he shows no sign of sharing his excitement about our relationship.
He’s told a couple of friends at university we’re together but he won’t tell his parents and family at home.
It feels as if I’m the only one making it real. If he is too scared to admit he’s gay, I’m worried that this relationship may never work.

GIVING up cigarettes pays off quickly.
After a year of not smoking the risk of a heart attack is cut by half. After ten years the risk of lung cancer also falls to about half that of a continuing smoker. Email me at [email protected] for my e-leaflet Giving Up Smoking.

Coming out to your own family was difficult and maybe he fears his is more homophobic.
Three months isn’t that long together. If he wants to introduce you as a friend, where’s the harm in that?
My e-leaflet on Gay Worries? can help you both and he can find support through FFLAG – Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (fflag.org.uk, 0845 652 0311). He can download a guide to telling his parents from its site.
