YouTube should face same rules and regulations as TV companies, says MP
Tory politician Damian Collins called for new online restrictions during a discussion on junk food advertising to children
A LEADING MP has said that online services such as YouTube should be subject to the same rules as TV companies.
Tory politician Damian Collins, who chairs the digital, culture, media and sport select committee, was talking about potential new restrictions on junk food advertising to protect kids.
But he pointed that youngsters largely watch things on services like YouTube rather than normal telly and so moves just for broadcasters would be missing the point.
He said: “The audience we are trying to protect isn’t watching the shows.
"They are watching stuff on YouTube where none of these restrictions apply.
“The same brands can advertise to them just as aggressively or more aggressively through the media they actually watch.

"This is clearly nonsense and has to change.”
The Government is said to be considering extending curbs on junk food advertising to family shows as well those directly aimed at kids.
Rules on junk food advertising on services like YouTube for children-orientated content have been tightened in recent years.
